Virginia's Pro-Filtering Bid
May Ride Again

If Virginia House Delegate Bob Marshall (R-Prince William County) gets his way, his colleagues will find that a pro-filtering budget amendment they rejected in mid-March has been reinstated by the governor when they reconvene April 22.

On March 31 Marshall wrote Governor James S. Gilmore II asking him to "help the parents of Virginia protect their children while they are in public libraries from pedophiles and perverts" by reattaching to the 1998–2000 budget a proposal denying some $32 million in state funds to public libraries offering unrestricted Internet access. According to an April 6 Washington Post report, Marshall also seeks to either win the support of Virginia State Librarian Nolan T. Yelich, who has weighed in against the amendment, or see to it that "someone like Yelich should get his resume out."

Although he hasn't seen the Marshall amendment, Gilmore has declared himself "supportive of the goals."
