Vice-president Gore Unveils Internet2Vice-president Al Gore formally announced plans April 14 for Internet2, an ultrafast computer network for academia that holds major implications for development of the current Internet as well. In its initial stages Internet2 will link 100 U.S. universities at 100 times the speed of the current Internet and a smaller group of schools 1,000 times as fast. It will also focus on increased reliability for critical applications such as telemedicine. Three companies have pledged over $500 million in goods and services towards the project. Qwest Communications has offered use of its fiberoptic lines, which run from Los Angeles to New York, and Cisco Systems and Northern Telecom are donating networking equipment such as routers and switches Although I2 won't be available to the general public, one of the project's goals is to develop technology that will be adopted by the Internet and private computer networks.
