Prudential Underwrites Saturday
Hours at Newark Public Library
For the first time since 1991, Newark (N.J.) Public Library has begun offering Saturday service at its 10 branch libraries, thanks to a $180,000 grant from the Prudential Foundation. The money will pay staff salaries to keep the facilities open from 9:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. until the end of the year.
NPL External Affairs Officer J. Dennis Papp told American Libraries the grant has "heightened" an ongoing dialogue with city officials since the library "felt the brunt" of municipal budget cuts seven years ago—while concurrently contributing $1 million for computer technology and $4 million for branch renovations.
NPL Director Alex Boyd also revealed that the Newark Public Schools was giving the library system some $230,000 for materials and programming to support the new library skills component in the schools' core curriculum.
