Former ALA executive director Elizabeth Martinez and partners Joel Howard, Jann Berman, and Karen Bakula have formed Literacy for the Millennium, a consulting firm headquartered in Sacramento, California. The group was in Chicago March 19 to present a partnership proposal to ALA's Fund for America's Libraries, which Martinez established during her three-year tenure as executive director that ended last July.
According to the proposal, the firm is "designed as a mechanism to draw attention, funding, and additional resources to public libraries throughout the nation." Among the initiatives proposed was a "nationwide three-day celebration, December 30, 1999--January 1, 2000" with resources "drawn from local communities as well as international leaders and celebrities."
The company has also approached the Urban Libraries Council and Libraries for the Future. Fund Director Walter Hansen said April 13 that no decision about the partnership had been reached.
