British Prime Minister Promotes
£600-Million Technology Initiative

British Prime Minister Tony Blair launched his own "People's Web Site" April 16 at Downing Street to reach Britain's 6 million Internet users with news of the government's £600-million investment in technology for the nation's libraries, schools, and hospitals.

A total of £250 million has been designated for the purchase of thousands of laptop computers, and £50 million in national lottery money will be used to train library staff and put information online. An additional £300 million will be devoted to training people to use the new technology over the next four years, with £210 million earmarked for librarian and teacher training. The government calls the commitment the largest such program it has ever undertaken.

Blair will subject himself to what aides are calling the first-ever "cybergrilling" at the end of April, when he will take part in a 45-minute cross-examination on the Net.
