Facing a $2-million deficit (roughly $1.3 million in U.S. dollars), the library at the University of Sydney in Australia is implementing major cuts in services and subscriptions while considering a staff "restructuring" that could involve cutting dozens of positions.
The Sydney Morning Herald reported April 13 that the library has already closed one of its 24 branches and is looking at shutting another. A 20% cut in periodical subscriptions has been ordered, and the university is considering the introduction of new charges for services such as computer training and interlibrary loan.
