Reacting to a public outcry, the Arlington (Va.) County Board decided April 14 to include funding for three branch libraries (Aurora Hills, Cherrydale, and Glencarlyn) in Arlington's public library system, according to the Arlington Journal. The board had proposed closing the branches and cutting other county services February 1, but citizens rallied and bombarded the board with phone calls, letters, and appearances at budget hearings.
"Civic associations took up the battle cry," Library Director Ann Friedman told American Libraries, "without us doing anything but stand proud." The county will support the branches at the requested level of $453,000, generated from increased property taxes, parking meter fines, and ambulance fees.
