Indiana U. Launches Program
to Turn Ph.Ds into Librarians

A new training program at Indiana University/Bloomington Libraries is being established to prepare area-studies Ph.D.s for positions as research librarians.

Announced in February and funded by a $164,000 grant from the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation, the program will commence recruit post-doctoral fellows who have already studied a certain area of the world extensively. Under the guidance of an experienced area studies librarian, they will use the knowledge they have already acquired in their doctoral studies to build the information and instructional skills necessary for them to function as area studies librarians.

"At a time when interest in global studies is gaining scholarly importance and widespread popularity, area studies librarians play a critical role in helping others to understand the world's cultures," said Suzanne Thorin, dean of University Libraries.
