Will the New Year Sprout a New Leaf for DCPL?

Determined to upgrade both the operation and image of the District of Columbia Public Library after a deluge of negative commentary last year (American Libraries, June/July 1997, p. 21–22), the interim leadership there came up with the idea for a town meeting with as many as 250 rapt library-patron observers, including an appearance by Mayor Marion Berry.

The November 13 event was the fifth in an unprecedented series of public forums designed "as much to get information out about the library as to get expressions of concern" from the public, Acting Director Molly Raphael told American Libraries.
