West Virginia's Fred Glazer DiesFred Glazer, who served as director of the West Virginia Library Commission for 24 years, died December 8 of kidney failure. "West Virginia had 25 viable public libraries when he began," Former Commission Chair Campbell Bell told the Charlotte Gazette. "When he ended, the state had 179." Glazer's other accomplishments included raising the amount of money the state gives the library commission, from less than eight cents per capita in 1972 to $3.75, which was among the country's top five state appropriations. In a controversial move, the commission fired Glazer without explanation in April 1996. Last July he filed suit against the commission and the Secretary of Education and the Arts, charging wrongful discharge, age discrimination, defamation, and other allegations. Posted December 22, 1997. |
