Rolling Meadows Trims Library Levy

Citing excessive salary increases, the Rolling Meadows (Ill.) City Council cut $50,000 from the library's $2.36-million 1998 property tax levy on December 9.

Observing that the library board's levy request called for a 10.6% increase in the salary budget to cover raises and the hiring of additional staff, alderman John D'Astice told the Rolling Meadows Review, "I felt that an increase of 4.6% was probably more in line in terms of salary and wages." The Review said December 11 that library Executive Director Carole Medal, who made a budget presentation to the council in November and had met with D'Astice to explain the spending plan, stormed out of the meeting after the vote.

The board has to decide where to cut the $50,000 from the budget, the newspaper reported, and can choose to ignore D'Astice's recommendation to lower salary increases.
