Gates Foundation Appoints Officials

The Gates Library Foundation announced December 9 that former Connecticut state librarian Richard Akeroyd has joined the staff as library programs director. The foundation has also established a grant review committee to evaluate the 103 applications that arrived by the December 15 deadline. Guidelines for assistance to libraries in low-income communities were released in October and projected grants to 40 libraries and three state library agencies (see American Libraries, Nov. 1997, p. 22) in the first round of the Gates $400-million commitment to libraries.

Committee members are Bernard Vavrek, library science professor and director of the Center for the Study of Rural Librarianship at Clarion University in Pennsylvania; Ginnie Cooper, director of libraries for Multnomah County, Oregon, and president of ALA's Public Library Association; Luis Herrera, director of the Pasadena (Calif.) Public Library; and Annabelle Stephens, associate professor at the University of Alabama SLIS. The committee expects to complete the review in February.
