Following Merger, Dialog Dismisses 330On November 21, just one week after the acquisition of Knight-Ridder Information by M.A.I.D. plc became final, the firm dismissed 330 employees—nearly one-quarter of its 1,400-person staff. Spokesperson Sharyn Fitzpatrick told American Libraries that the dismissals were made to eliminate redundancies following the merger of the two firms to form the new Dialog Corporation. Knight-Ridder's Mountain View, California, office received the brunt of the cuts, losing 160 employees. Overall, said Fitzpatrick, the cost-cutting measures are expected to save $30 million in the first year alone. She added that the firm was looking at further efficiency measures. “The overall message is how we can do things better, but still do them economically,” she said. Posted December 15, 1997. |
