Albany Director Departs Quietly

After 11 sometimes-controversial years as director of the Albany (N.Y.) Public Library, William O’Connor quietly stepped down November 28. The library’s board announced O'Connor’s retirement December 1 with a brief statement, reported the Albany Times Union the following day.

The newspaper reported that O'Connor had gone on vacation after a closed-door board meeting November 10 at which sources said he was asked to leave. The Times Union had reported November 14 that several sources said the board wanted to find a new director to move the technologically weak library into the computer age.
