AL Direct

FAQ

What is AL Direct?

AL Direct (American Libraries Direct) is an electronic newsletter sent to ALA personal members by e-mail as a perquisite of membership. It is a weekly supplement to American Libraries that provides breaking news about library funding, legislation, access to information, and technology.

How often is it published?

AL Direct is e-mailed once a week, every Wednesday.

What appears in AL Direct?

AL Direct features news stories from the American Libraries Online website, ALA press releases and other news from ALA divisions and offices, library-related news online, selections from American Libraries’ Datebook, and other items of interest from the ALA website.

Will this replace American Libraries?

No. AL Direct is not a replacement for the fully featured American Libraries print magazine, a full-text version of which is available to ALA members online through ebrary.

Is this the same as AL’s weekly digest of news stories?

Not exactly. A digest of news stories posted on the American Libraries Online website is sent out every Friday to subscribers to the al_news discussion list. AL Direct includes these stories and more.

Who gets AL Direct?

All current personal members of ALA who have a valid e-mail address in their membership records will receive AL Direct.

How do I update my e-mail address?

Login to the ALA website, click on “View My ALA,” then choose “Update My Profile” to make changes to your contact information. Be sure to click “Save and Continue” at the bottom of the page to validate your changes. Or call ALA Member Services at 800-545-2433, ext. 5, with instructions.

I don’t get AL Direct, but I’m an ALA member. How do I sign up?

First, check to see if your e-mail address on record is valid (see above). If so, send an e-mail message to aldirect@ala.org with your name and ALA membership number and we will begin delivery with the next available issue.

How do I unsubscribe?

Click on the “unsubscribe” link in the e-mail message accompanying AL Direct.

Is AL Direct archived?

Much of AL Direct consists of web links, some of which may be valid for only a short time. No print version of AL Direct exists. Although we maintain an archival copy, we do not post issues on the ALA website. ALA members are free to archive their personal copies for their institutions.

How do I contact AL Direct?

Send feedback to aldirect@ala.org. To inquire about advertising, contact Advertising Sales Manager Brian Searles at bsearles@ala.org.
