For ALCTS Authors
Copyright Agreements
Authors have the choice of two agreements: an assignment and a license.
Following is a brief overview, which should in no way be meant to replace the actual documents.
The author allows ALA/ALCTS:
- all right, title, and interest in the work, including copyright, in all formats.
- two years to publish the work. If not published after this time, copyright would revert back to the author.
ALA/ALCTS agrees to:
- always credit author as the author of the work
- grant author a royalty-free, limited license--provided the ALA publication is cited by author, title, and publisher--for:
- making and distributing copies for teaching
- reusing material in a book by the author or in a collection of the author’s work
- using and distributing the work internally at the author’s place of employment, and for promotional and other noncommercial purposes
- using figures and tables for any purpose
- making oral presentations
- using and distributing the work on the author’s web site (after a period of thirty after the publication date).
Under this license, copyright of the work remains in author’s name.
The author grants ALA/ALCTS the right to:
- print, publish, reproduce, or distribute the work anywhere by any method
- market or sell the work or any part of it as it sees fit
- use the author’s name in association with the work in print, advertising, and promotional materials.
The author further agrees:
- not to publish the work in print prior to the publication of the work by ALA/ALCTS, who also requests that should you publish the work elsewhere, you cite ALA's publication by author, title, and publisher.
- that the work has not been previously published, in whole or in part, except as described by the author.
The text on this page is simply explanatory and is not legally binding and cannot supercede the actual agreement documents.
