EDUCATION

With our annual conference programs and preconferences, regional institutes and workshops, and online courses, ALCTS equips you with practical, up-to-the-minute information covering all facets of technical services—from metadata to ethics, from preservation to technical services outsourcing. We also facilitate local programming through our Council of Regional Groups (CRG), a national clearinghouse for high-quality program topics and speakers.

AWARDS & HONORS

ALCTS appreciates the many contributions individuals make to the profession through our awards. Our awards recognize outstanding and potential achievement in serials, cataloging, acquisitions, published scholarship, and general technical services librarianship. Award juries composed of ALCTS members, your colleagues and peers, select recipients.

COMMUNITY

Join and participate in an ALCTS committee, discussion group, or shared interest group and get engaged in the ALCTS community of experts, leaders, and fellow members who provide a wealth of information and guidance.

Our 40 discussion groups meet at Midwinter and Annual to discuss topics such as collection management and development in public libraries and research libraries, library/vendor relations, authority control in the online environment, and catalog management.

Participating in one of our 80 committees offers members a chance to develop, practice, and polish professional skills such as problem solving, marketing, policymaking, planning, leadership, and budgeting.

Volunteer opportunities also help members get the recognition they deserve from their colleagues and employers.

Meet future employers, potential employees, information specialists and librarians from different regions, and new friends as you exchange ideas and experiences in common practices and have fun.

PUBLISHING

Created by leaders and experts, our members contribute to and benefit from our dynamic print and electronic publishing program. From guides on acquisitions and collection management practices, to a national shelf-count and analysis, resources in preservation, or paper on cataloging the web, you are likely to find a publication with the solutions you need.

ALCTS is also the authority in developing, evaluating, revising, and promoting standards and best practices for creating, collecting, organizing, delivering, managing, and preserving information resources in all forms. Our internationally recognized accomplishments include standards in the following areas:

  • Anglo-American Cataloging Rules
  • Collection management and acquisitions guidelines
  • Subject access
  • Preservation and collection management and development policy

Also, ALCTS’ serial publications keep members on the cutting edge of new and developing practices, research, and ALCTS news.

  • ALCTS Newsletter Online, the voice of the association, is published six times a year on the ALCTS web site. The Newsletter keeps members and those interested in ALCTS issues aware of current association news, events, updates, practice and developments in the field, and other relevant issues.
  • Library Resources & Technical Services (LRTS), our scholarly journal, is published quarterly. LRTS ranks among the premier authorities on technical services issues and trends and is cited more than twice as often as other technical services journals.

INFORMATION SHARING

ALCTS works hard to help our members stay up-to-date on the latest trends, practices, and issues facing you, our members. Through our web site, quarterly journal, online newsletter, and electronic discussion lists, we keep our members informed of research, association opportunities and activities, and general items of interest.
