ALCTS Preconference

Cataloging & Description of Cartographic Resources: From Parchment to Pixels, Paper to Digital

Thursday, June 22, 2006 and Friday, June 23, 2006
Morial Convention Center, Room 288
New Orleans, LA

Description
For novices primarily but includes advanced topics for experienced catalogers. Learn map cataloging basics on Thursday, focusing on three areas of bibliographic description: title(s), mathematical data, and physical description. Additional areas/topics will be covered as well. Thursday's sessions will focus on hardcopy maps; Friday covers digital cartographic resources. Principles covered on Thursday will be applied to digital items on Friday.

This preconference will be offered in three (3) different sessions over two (2) days.

Thursday Morning Session (8:30 a.m. - 12 noon)
Topics:

  • Introduction to Maps, Map Cataloging Tools, Sources of Information, and the "Main Map" concept
  • Title and Choosing between Titles
  • Main Entry/Statement of Responsibility and Edition
  • Introduction to Scale; working with Scale statements
  • Using the Natural Scale Indicator practice
  • Projections and Coordinates

Thursday Afternoon Session (1:00 p.m. - 5:30 p.m.)
Topics:

  • Physical Description: How many maps? or Extent of Item
  • Physical Description: Other Physical Details
  • Physical Description: Dimensions, and "Putting it all Together"
  • Notes and Fixed Fields
  • LC G-classification overview
  • Q&A, Creating a bibliographic record, and a hands-on exercise

Friday Morning Session (8:30 a.m. - 12:00 noon)
Topics:

  • Cataloging Electronic Cartographic Materials - The Basics
  • Electronic Cartographic Materials - MARC21 fields 342, 343, 352, 552, etc.
