Information Literacy in the Disciplines: Criteria for Inclusion
The Information Literacy in the Disciplines web site is designed for instructors and librarians who are incorporating information literacy skills into their existing curriculum. The project identifies two classes of materials: standards or guidelines from accrediting agencies and professional associations; and supplementary materials such as curricula, articles, and presentations. Suggestions for additional materials that meet the criteria for inclusion may be submitted for consideration to the Chair of the IS Information Literacy in the Disciplines Committee at any time. The web site and criteria will be revised and updated by the Information Literacy in the Disciplines Committee annually before the ALA Annual Conference.
Criteria for Standards or Guidelines from Accrediting Agencies & Professional Associations:
Included standards or guidelines should address:
- the importance of adequate library and
information resources, both material and personnel, for success in the
discipline,
- the need for instruction on information
seeking behaviors,
- the need for student proficiency with the
discipline's information resources, or
- the need for overall student information literacy for success in the profession.
Criteria for Curricula, Articles and Presentations:
Included supplementary materials should provide:
- insights to the discipline's approach to
information literacy,
- adaptable resources in the form of
assignments, activities and tutorials addressing information literacy
skills within the discipline, or
- research data supporting the importance of information literacy integration in the discipline.
