Annual Planning Goals, 2004-2005
Project 1
Instruction Section Strategic Direction:
IS leads the way in research related to teaching and learning.
Project Description:
PRIMO Reviews: In order to provide instruction librarians with models of excellent online instruction materials the committee will conduct two rounds of reviews for the Peer Reviewed Instruction Materials Online (PRIMO) to increase the number of materials in the database by Annual 2005.
Action Plan:
1. Post call for submissions to listservs in November and April.
2. Divide submissions among groups of committee members for review.
3. Complete reviews before Midwinter and Annual meetings.
4. Add accepted sites to IEP database within one month of finishing the reviews.
5. Send results to submitters within one month of finishing reviews.
6. Develop and post a feedback form for visitors.
Proposed Completion Date:
Ongoing project with deadlines throughout the year.
Means of evaluating the success of the project or activity:
This project will be a success if the reviews are conducted and the materials are added to the database in a timely manner. Success can also be measured through a feedback form asking visitors about the usefulness of the PRIMO database.
Resources required:
Web server capable of running the PRIMO database.
Value of this activity or project to the section:
The purpose of the Internet Education Project is to provide instruction librarians with examples of excellent online instruction
materials. In addition to the clearinghouse aspect, it also serves as a peer-review mechanism for instruction materials. Having a project accepted for inclusion into the database may be helpful for instruction librarians seeking promotion and tenure.
Project 2
Instruction Section Strategic Direction:
IS leads the way in research related to teaching and learning
Project Description:
PRIMO Background Survey: Survey creators of accepted sites in order to provide instruction librarians with details on how online instruction materials are developed. The results of the survey will enhance the Internet Education Project database by including background information on the development of accepted projects.
Action Plan:
1. Send survey to projects accepted during the Midwinter and Annual rounds.
2. Upgrade PRIMO database to integrate survey information into description of project.
Proposed Completion Date: Ongoing project with deadlines after each review round.
Means of evaluating the success of the project or activity:
At least half of the accepted projects in the designated rounds will have the background information on their development.
Resources required: Web server to host survey.
Value of this activity or project to the section:
This project will extend the usefulness of PRIMO. It will also further the committee's charge to "act as a resource and information-sharing vehicle for those who use electronic technologies in bibliographic instruction" by helping instruction librarians to see what types of resources and support are necessary to create the types of projects included in the RPIMO database.
Project 3
Instruction Section Strategic Direction:
IS leads the way in research related to teaching and learning.
Project Description:
PRIMO Site of the Month: In order to increase awareness of the PRIMO Project, profile one recently accepted project each month and post to ILI-L and the committee web site.
Action Plan:
1. Select sites to be profiled.
2. Assign committee members to conduct interviews.
3. Conduct interviews and draft profile.
4. Share with committee and Executive Committee Liaison.
5. Post to ILI-L and committee web site.
Proposed Completion Date:
Ongoing project with deadlines each month.
Means of evaluating the success of the project or activity:
Success may be measured by an increase in the use of the PRIMO database, based on a web log count of number of visitors.
Resources required:
Web server space, ILI-L
Value of this activity or project to the section:
By increasing the visibility of PRIMO, the committee will better meet its charge to "act as a resource and information-sharing
vehicle for those who use electronic technologies in bibliographic instruction." This monthly profile allows us to "push" information about online instruction to instruction librarians.
Project 4
Instruction Section Strategic Direction:
IS leads the way in research related to teaching and learning.
Project Description:
InfoTech Tips and Trends: In order to share information about emerging or new technologies that are affecting instruction, focus on one technology each quarter and post a message/discussion question to ILI-L and the committee web site.
Action Plan:
1. Identify technologies to profile
2. Assign committee members to do profile
3. Draft profile
4. Share profile with Committee and Executive Committee Liaison
5. Post to ILI-L and committee web site
Proposed Completion Date:
Ongoing project with deadlines each quarter.
Means of evaluating the success of the project or activity:
The project will be a success if librarians participate in the discussion of the new technology profiled, and if they pose
additional questions to which the committee can respond.
Resources required:
Web server, ILI-L
Value of this activity or project to the section:
Through this quarterly "column" we plan to provide practical tips or start a discussion about a problem related to technology and
instruction. By posting to ILI-L will we be able to push this information to instruction librarians and provide a forum for them to
ask other questions related to technology in instruction.
Project 5
Instruction Section Strategic Direction:
IS is an effective and dynamic organization
Project Description:
Migrate the PRIMO database from an institutional server to an appropriate alternative option.
Action Plan:
1. Identify appropriate alternative server space, either on ALA servers or on rented server space.
2. Identify funding sources for server space.
3. Work with IS web master, Colgate staff, and ALA staff to move the database to a different server.
Proposed Completion Date:
Annual 2005
Means of evaluating the success of the project or activity:
The project will be successful if the database is moved to a more permanent server home.
Resources required:
Web server that can support web-based database searching.
Value of this activity or project to the section:
Using a more permanent server will give this ongoing project a stable and long standing home. Currently, the Committee relies on a former committee chair's institutional server for space. Using the chair's institutional server means that the project must move every year or two.
