Annual Planning Goals, 2003-2004

Project #1

Instruction Section Strategic Plan Goal:
5.0 IS leads the way in research related to teaching and learning

Project Description:
Internet Education Project Reviews: In order to provide instruction librarians with models of excellent online instruction materials the committee will conduct two rounds of reviews for the Internet Education Project (IEP) to increase the number of materials in the database by Annual 2004.

Action Plan:
1. Post call for submissions to listservs in November and April.
2. Divide submissions among groups of committee members for review.
3. Complete reviews before Midwinter and Annual meetings.
4. Add accepted sites to IEP database within one month of finishing the reviews.
5. Send results to submitters within one month of finishing reviews.
6. Develop and post a feedback form for visitors.

Proposed Completion Date:
Ongoing project with deadlines throughout the year.

Value to the Section:
The purpose of the Internet Education Project is to provide instruction librarians with examples of excellent online instruction materials. In addition to the clearinghouse aspect, it also serves as a peer-review mechanism for instruction materials. Having a project accepted for inclusion into the database may be helpful for instruction librarians seeking promotion and tenure.

Midwinter Progress Report:
We completed the first round of reviews shortly after Midwinter. Thirty-nine projects were submitted and nine projects met the selection criteria. New projects have been added to the IEP database and all submitters have been contacted with the results. The next round of reviews is on schedule, with publicity beginning in April and reviews beginning after May 15.

Project #2

Instruction Section Strategic Plan Goal:
5.0 IS leads the way in research related to teaching and learning

Project Description:
Internet Education Project Background Survey: Survey creators of accepted sites in order to provide instruction librarians with details on how online instruction materials are developed. The results of the survey will enhance the Internet Education Project database by including background information on the development of accepted projects.

Action Plan:
1. Send survey to projects accepted during the Midwinter and Annual rounds.
2. Upgrade IEP database to integrate survey information into description of project.

Proposed Completion Date:
Ongoing project with deadlines after each review round.

Value to the Section:
This project will extend the usefulness of the Internet Education Project. It will also further the committee's charge to "act as a resource and information-sharing vehicle for those who use electronic technologies in bibliographic instruction" by helping instruction librarians to see what types of resources and support are necessary to create the types of projects included in the Internet Education Project database.

Midwinter Progress Report:
Surveys were sent to accepted projects from the Summer 2003 round. We have received 14/15 surveys. Survey has been sent to sites accepted during the Midwinter round.

Project #3

Instruction Section Strategic Plan Goal:
5.0 IS leads the way in research related to teaching and learning

Project Description:
Internet Education Project Site of the Month: In order to increase awareness of the Internet Education Project, profile one recently accepted project each month and post to ILI-L and the committee web site.

Action Plan:
1. Select sites to be profiled.
2. Assign committee members to conduct interviews.
3. Conduct interviews and draft profile.
4. Share with committee and Executive Committee Liaison.
5. Post to ILI-L and committee web site.

Proposed Completion Date:
Ongoing project with deadlines each month.

Value to the Section:
By increasing the visibility of the Internet Education Project, the committee will better meet its charge to "act as a resource and information-sharing vehicle for those who use electronic technologies in bibliographic instruction." This monthly profile allows us to "push" information about online instruction to instruction librarians.

Midwinter Progress Report:
Sites have been profiled every month:
December 2003: Pilot: An Information Literacy Tutorial
November 2003: Information Literacy Tutorial
October 2003: LOBO, The Library Online Basic Orientation
September 2003: Research the Next Generation
August 2003: ©Primer
July 2003: OASIS: Online Advancement of Student Information Skills
Sites for January through July will be selected from the sites accepted during the Midwinter review round.

Project #4

Instruction Section Strategic Plan Goal:
5.0 IS leads the way in research related to teaching and learning

Project Description:
InfoTech Tips and Trends: In order to share information about emerging or new technologies that are affecting instruction, focus on one technology each quarter and post a message/discussion question to ILI-L and the committee web site.

Action Plan:
1. Identify technologies to profile
2. Assign committee members to do profile
3. Draft profile
4. Share profile with Committee and Executive Committee Liaison
5. Post to ILI-L and committee web site

Proposed Completion Date:
Ongoing project with deadlines each quarter.

Value to the Section:
Through this quarterly "column" we plan to provide practical tips or start a discussion about a problem related to technology and instruction. By posting to ILI-L will we be able to push this information to instruction librarians and provide a forum for them to ask other questions related to technology in instruction.

Midwinter Progress Report:
During Midwinter meeting we discussed ways of providing InfoTech Tips and Trends information. We will begin this project before the Annual conference.

Project #5

Instruction Section Strategic Plan Goal:
6.0 IS is an effective and dynamic organization

Project Description:
Change the name of Internet Education Project.

Action Plan:
1. Draft proposal for rationale of name change.
2. Send proposal to Executive Committee.
3. Brainstorm new names at Midwinter Meeting.
4. Send proposed names to Executive Committee for approval.
5. Publicize new name and create logo for sites.

Proposed Completion Date:
Annual 2004.

Value to the Section:
When this project began the Internet was new and the materials collected in the Internet Education Project were specific to Internet skills. The new name will reflect the current instruction practice and environment.

Midwinter Progress Report:
During Midwinter, the committee brainstormed a new name, and selected PRIMO: Peer-Reviewed Instructional Materials Online. This name was submitted to Executive Committee for approval after Midwinter, and has since been approved. We are now working on creating a logo, pending information from ACRL regarding guidelines.

Project #6

Instruction Section Strategic Plan Goal:
6.0 IS is an effective and dynamic organization

Project Description:
Migrate the Internet Education Project database from an institutional server to the ALA server.

Action Plan:
1. Draft a document outlining the technical specifications for the database.
2. Send draft to Executive Committee, Communications Committee, and IS web master.
3. Work with IS web master and/or ALA staff to move the database to their server.

Proposed Completion Date:
Annual 2004.

Value to the Section:
Using ALA's server will give this ongoing project a stable and long standing home. Currently, the Committee relies on a former committee chair's institutional server for space. Using the chair's institutional server means that the project must move every year or two.

Midwinter Progress Report:
Before Midwinter, the co-chairs submitted a document to Executive Committee describing the technical needs for the database. During Midwinter Executive Committee discussed the document. We are awaiting further information from ACRL regarding ALA server capabilities.
