Welcome to the February 2008 issue of C&RL News. Is it February already? It’s hard to believe, but the term is moving along and many students are starting to make early spring break plans. But students don’t get to have all the travel-related fun!
This month’s issue features two articles covering librarians on the road. Last month, Russell A. Hall outlined the concept of the “embedded librarian” in a classroom setting. In this issue, Susan Sharpless Smith and Lynn Sutton of Wake Forest University take the concept out of the classroom in their article “Embedded librarians: On the road in the Deep South.” They report on their experiences providing research assistance and technology services as students visited Civil Rights sites and participated in service learning in Gulf Coast libraries ravaged by Hurricane Katrina. Their project is the winner of the 2008 ACRL Instruction Section Innovation Award.
Librarian travels aren’t limited to the United States. In her article “Real World/Life Rules,” Katherine Furlong of Lafayette College discusses her role as an information literacy librarian during two choir tours of Europe. She describes both the joys and the challenges of taking library services on the road, along with providing useful advice for planning and executing for travel projects.
This issue also features information on “Promoting faculty success” through a reinvigorated faculty association by Brett Spencer and Jennifer McClure, a scholarly communication column on free online access to publicly funded NIH research, statements from the candidates for ACRL vice-president/president-elect, and Internet resources on accounting and auditing sites by Colleen D. Anderson.
Of course don’t ignore the rest of the great articles and columns in this month’s issue, including another exciting edition of “Job of a Lifetime.” Enjoy!
