PEOPLE IN THE NEWSC&RL News, April 2008 Sarah Brown has joined the University of Houston as reference and instruction librarian. Nora Dethloff has been appointed coordinator of interlibrary loan services at the University of Houston. Ana Dubnjakovic is now performing arts librarian and college librarian for liberal arts and human sciences at Virginia Tech. Josh Finnell has been named assistant professor of library science and reference librarian at McNeese State University in Lake Charles, Louisiana. Kelli Getz has joined the University of Houston as assistant head of acquisitions. Lee Hilyer has been appointed director of the research and reference service program at the University of Houston. Barbara E. Kemp has joined the Nimitz Library at the U.S. Naval Academy as the head of reference and instruction. Helice Koffler has been appointed manuscripts and special collection materials cataloging librarian at the University of Washington-Seattle. Kuang-Hwei “Janet” Lee-Smeltzer has been appointed head of cataloging and metadata services at the University of Alabama Libraries. Coleen Martin has been appointed coordinator of outreach services librarian at California State University-Northridge’s Oviatt Library. Aaron D. Purcell has been appointed the head of special collections and archives at Virginia Tech. Judith Trump has accepted the position of social science reference librarian at Old Dominion University. Rachel Vacek is now the Web services coordinator at the University of Houston. Edward Wladas has been named science reference librarian at Old Dominion University. Retirements Laura B. Cohen has retired from her position as Web support librarian at the University at Albany after 14 years of service. Prior to her appointment to the library faculty, she served as a speech pathologist in various settings in New York and Vermont. During her Albany career, Cohen was an active member of a variety of professional organizations, chief among which is ALA and its divisions. Through her writings and contributions, Cohen has been an influential voice for the library community on the implications of Web technology on library operations and services. She has served on the Editorial Board of Information Technology and Libraries. She has been a guest editor of Reference Librarian. Her essays and treatises have appeared in many of the pre-eminent print journals in librarianship, as well as in online publications. She has frequently been called upon to lecture and present nationally and internationally. Her thoughtful and well received work on “Issues in URL Management in Digital Collections,” her series on “A Two-Tiered Model for Analyzing Web Site Usage Statistics,” “Library 2.0 Initiatives in Academic Libraries,” “A Manifesto for Our Times,” and “Yahoo! and the Abdication of Judgment” has helped shape national discussions on the role of the Web and libraries. In 1996 she received the NBNSoft Content Award for “The Virtual Library” portion of the University Libraries Web site. She was inducted into the Internet Hall of Fame in 2001. Her development of a popular series of Internet tutorials for library users earned her a Webopeida Award. In 2001 she earned high praise from Library Journal for her editorship of volume 56 of Reference Librarian, and that same year she was awarded the SUNY Chancellor’s and University at Albany President’s Award for Excellence in Librarianship. Barbara Via has retired from her position as assistant director for the University at Albany Graduate and Science Library and Circulation Services Division. During her tenure at the University at Albany, she has been an active member of a number of professional groups, chief among the Eastern New York Chapter of the Association of College Research Libraries (ENY/ACRL) which she served as president. She was also very active in the State University of New York Librarians Association for many years, and served as president of that organization. She has published several articles and book chapters focusing on journal publishing in the field of library and information science. She has frequently taught as an adjunct instructor in the Department of Information Studies, College of Computing and Information. In 2006, she was promoted to the rank of librarian. Following her retirement, she will return to the library on a temporary, part-time basis.

Donald E. Riggs, former vice president for information services and university librarian at Nova Southeastern University (NSU), died Tuesday, February 19, 2008. He was president of the Library Administration and Management Association (LAMA) from 1994 to 1995 and was instrumental in moving the division forward on a number of fronts. “Don was a valued colleague,” said Ray Ferrero Jr., president of NSU. “Don will be remembered as the ‘architect’ of NSU’s Alvin Sherman Library, Research and Information Technology Center joint-use agreement with Broward County, the only such arrangement between a private university and a public library system in the United States. “He was instrumental in planning the Sherman Library after he joined NSU in 1997. “Just last year, the university and community celebrated the Sherman Library’s fifth anniversary with Don—and I can truly say that this was one of the proudest moments in his distinguished career.” When he retired December 2007 due to poor health, NSU established the Donald E. Riggs Scholarship Fund.
