PRESERVATION NEWS

C&RL News, January 2005
Vol. 66, No. 1

by Jane Hedberg

Bookbinding exhibit
The Department of Rare Books and Special Collections in Firestone Library at Princeton University has mounted Hand Bookbindings from Special Collections in the Princeton University Library: Plain and Simple to Grand and Glorious. It is an online version of a traditional exhibit at the library between November 2002 and April 2003. There are images of more than 200 bindings divided into 26 categories by binding types and techniques. Viewers may closely examine binding details by using the magnifier function to select an area and the amount of magnification desired.

The URL for the exhibit is libweb5.princeton.edu/visual_materials/hb/hb.html.

IASA guidelines
The International Association of Sound and Audiovisual Archives (IASA) published Guidelines on Production and Preservation of Digital Audio Objects. It was written by members of the IASA Technical Committee, edited by Kevin Bradley of the National Library of Australia, and endorsed by UNESCO as a recommended practice document. The guidelines offer advice about formats and long-term sustainability, whether creating digital copies from analog originals or digital originals.

Copies cost 25.00 Euros each, plus shipping, and may be ordered from Ilse Assmann, Media Libraries, South African Broadcasting Corporation, P.O. Box 931, 2006 Auckland Park, South Africa; fax: +27 11 714 4281; e-mail: assmanni@sabc.co.za. For more information about the IASA, consult their Web site at www.iasa-web.org.

MMAA
The Midwest Media Archives Alliance (MMAA) in Chicago, Illinois offers support for Midwestern collectors of film, video, and audio materials. Recently founded by archivists Carolyn Faber and Dwight Swanson, the alliance is designed to help promote and preserve regional media collections. Its goal is to provide information and advice about care and maintenance of film, video, and audio formats, access policies and strategies, funding and revenue generation, collection promotion, and preservation principles and techniques. The founders plan for the MMAA to serve as a clearinghouse for information and resources and hope to create useful connections among individuals and organizations that hold this type of resource.

The URL for their nascent Web site is www.midwestmediaarchives.org.
