In the News

C&RL News, January 2004
Vol. 65, No. 1

In this month’s issue, Patricia A. Kreitz explores ACRL President Tyrone Cannon’s theme of "Partnerships and Connections" by addressing the notion of librarians as knowledge builders. She describes the faculty/librarian partnership that resulted in the Stanford Linear Accelerator Center library collaborating with similar research centers worldwide to create a preprint archive for particle physics. The article offers a positive example of the value of campus partnerships to not only the local learning community, but to the worldwide community, as well.

In "Territorial invasion or symbiotic relationship?" authors Naomi R. Sutherland and Valarie P. Adams focus on the opportunities for cooperation between technical services and reference staffs. They propose a number of methods for opening communication between the two areas to end the perceived "war" between cataloging and reference.

The Scholarly Communication column provides a unique example of a library’s contribution to scholarly communication, the publication of the Journal of Insect Science (an online, open access journal) by the University of Arizona library.

To help you prepare for the election this spring, information on the ACRL candidates for vice-president/president-elect, Camila Alire and Charles Kratz, is provided, along with the complete slate of candidates for section officers.

Need to find an article from the 2003 volume of C&RL News but not sure where to look? A complete index is provided in this issue. For those of you hoping to appear in a future index, guidelines for submitting articles to the magazine are included.
