About the cover
The cover illustration, Marble column-entrance to the Forbidden City, Peking, ca. 1933, is a water color by Jeanne Janish from the Special Collections of the University of Nevada-Las Vegas (UNLV). Janish has drawn more than 11,000 illustrations for publication and was considered the foremost botanical illustrator in the United States. While living in China from 1930 to 1934, Janish painted water colors showing many of that county’s great landmarks. She was fascinated by the colors of China and while there, in addition to painting, designed rugs and sketched people and scenes in and around Peking (Beijing). Many of Janish’s works are now housed at UNLV. An online exhibit of her botanical sketches and watercolors can be found at: library.nevada.edu/gallery/janish/index.html.
