Vol. 63 No. 8

by Ann Viles

Student use of library Web sites
A Harris Interactive Web survey, commissioned by OCLC in December 2001 to study the Internet information habits of U.S. college students, established baseline data for students’ “usage of campus library websites.” Of the “seven-in-ten students [who] use the campus library website for at least some of their assignments,” the most frequently used information resources on library Web sites were “Fulltext/Electronic journals” (67%) followed by the “Library catalog” (57%), “Databases” (51%), and “Indexes to journal articles” (51%). Only 6 percent of the students surveyed reported any use of ask-a-librarian services.

Digitization activities in academic libraries
Thirty-four percent of academic libraries responding to a recent national survey by the Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS) reported digitization activities during the past year. Of those, 38 percent were associated with cooperative digitization programs, and 21 percent include digital items in their online catalogs.
