Summary of Features and Articles

December 2007

Editorial: The Open Access Debate: Phase 2, by Irving E. Rockwood. Cooler heads and hearts now prevail in the open access debate.

Understanding and Appreciating Fantasy Literature, by Patti J. Kurtz, assistant professor of English and director of the Writing Center at Minot State University.

Until a few decades ago, scholars would shelve fantasy literature in the children's section, deeming it unworthy of serious critical attention. More recently, the publication of several seminal critical works, along with the release of films based on The Lord of the Rings and the Harry Potter books, has legitimized fantasy as a genre. Kurtz discusses possible definitions of fantasy literature, the history of fantasy, and the critical literature (the main section of the essay), among other topics. In addition to the cite list, Kurtz provides a list of classic fantasy authors and their works.

Feature: Forthcoming Art & Architecture Publications, 2007–2008. This annual feature highlights print and electronic reference titles scheduled for publication from November 2007 through mid-2008. Each of the titles on the list was suggested by the publisher and then selected by Choice for its relevance to undergraduate curricula.

Significant European Scholarly Titles, 2006. This annual Choice feature, compiled by members of the College and Medium-Sized Libraries Discussion Group of ACRL's Western Europe Specialists Section, lists noteworthy nonliterary European titles published during 2006, in Italian, French, German, and Spanish. The list supplies standard Choice bibliographic information, plus prices in euros when available and a brief summary of contents. A list of vendors is included.
