Topping Off the New Choice Building

Middletown, CT –Choice magazine, a publishing unit of the Association of College and Research Libraries (ACRL), celebrated the groundbreaking of its new office on March 25, 2008.  The new Liberty Square building, located on Main Street in Middletown, will have retail space on the ground floor, and Choice will occupy the entire third floor.

In recognition of environmental issues, Liberty Square is being built as a “green building.”  Gary Dayharsh of Delta Building Corp., the contractor for this project, said this will include extra insulation for energy efficiency, high-efficiency systems and windows, recycled steel materials, and other green products.  Choice will continue this green theme inside the office as well.  “The office will have green furniture,” said Nancy Sbona, senior administrative assistant at Choice.  “Meaning the furniture will be made out of durable, recycled wood with all nontoxic materials from a local retailer.  Energy-efficient light bulbs will also be used.”

In honor of the “going green” theme, Gary Dayharsh had a live evergreen tree placed on the top of the building for the groundbreaking ceremony.  The tree not only symbolizes the green building, but is also an old Scandinavian tradition to bring good luck to new steel buildings.  The tree will be planted in Dayharsh’s yard when the building is completed in three to four months (July 2008).

Irving Rockwood, editor and publisher of Choice magazine, and Greg Calloway, chief financial officer of ALA, were in attendance for the groundbreaking, along with the Choice staff.  At the ceremonial champagne toast Rockwood said, “None of this could have happened without the active support and cooperation of ACRL and ALA.  Everyone involved brought one or more crucial assets to the table.”
