Course Description:
The instructor will walk participants through the major copyright issues facing academic librarians today. Topics covered will include electronic reserves, interlibrary loan, using media in courseware, and campus copyright policies.  Students will draft short papers and opinion pieces using real library situations as the backdrop. Course materials will include sample library policies, articles and portions of the recently published Complete Copyright: An Everyday Guide for Librarians (ALA, 2004). 

The course was develped by Carrie Russell, copyright specialist for ALA’s Office for Information Technology Policy in Washington, DC.

Current Copyright Issues Facing Academic Librarians is a primarily a synchronous seminar, allowing participants to work through course material at times convenient to them throughout the week. However, specific material and activities will be covered during each week of the course. Real-time online chat with the instructor will be scheduled during week two of the course to discuss case studies, time and day to be determined. Students may also choose to schedule additional chat time with the instructor, as they feel necessary. Participation in threaded discussions will be a course requirement. 

Learning Outcomes:
By the end of this seminar you will:

• understand the four factors of fair use and be able to apply the factors to real library situations.
• have begun designing strategies to explain fair use to faculty and students.
• identify the limitations of your library’s interlibrary loan or reserve services policies regarding copyright.
• recognize the benefits and pitfalls of the Technology, Education and Copyright Harmonization (TEACH) Act
• understand the library’s responsibilities when abiding by the copyright law.

Your participation will require approximately three to five hours per week to:

• Read the online seminar material
• Post to online discussion boards
• Complete online exercises and other assignments
• Complete a seminar evaluation form
