Virtual Conference Online Roundtable Discussion

Online Roundtable Discussions allow facilitators and conference participants to chat in real-time, as well as share images and applications.  Synchronous chat sessions will last up to 45 minutes.

Teaching Faculty to Thrive in an Electronic Library Environment

Electronic resources are driving university budgets and library collection development plans. How do universities effectively communicate the availability and successful use of new electronic resources to the faculty? This online roundtable discussion will focus on how academic libraries are working to connect and teach faculty about new electronic resources, changes and updates in electronic tools, and effective integration of library-licensed resources into classes and faculty research. Innovative techniques on how libraries are communicating with and connecting to faculty, particularly through the use of online courseware and university portals, will be the central theme of this discussion. Facilitators will present new ideas and options for communicating with faculty. Discussion themes will include how to attract faculty to librarian-led ongoing information update exchanges organized through online courseware, the use and effectiveness of e-mail communication, and the cost-benefit analysis of librarians personally contacting faculty to alert them to new relevant resources. This will be an interactive chat proposing ideas for new service areas, while encouraging participants to contribute communication ideas that work (or don’t work) at their respective college or university library.

Learning Outcomes:

  • Participants will be challenged to examine their assumptions regarding how they inform their faculty about new resources and, also, critically examine what they are doing in terms of faculty communications and resource use training.
  • Participants will have the opportunity to look at best practices that are being used by libraries to communicate with faculty and will be provided with ideas on how they can improve library-faculty communication at their own college or university.
  • Participants will learn how to help faculty understand, appreciate and effectively access and utilize electronic scholarly research tools that are available through the library.

Presenter(s): Kathryn Miller, National-Louis University
Theme Track: Transforming Spaces

Leadership and the Next Generation Librarian: Envisioning the Future

There is much talk about the libraries of the future, but who will lead them? What are these young professionals like and how are they different than their predecessors? What skills should they obtain before they move on to these roles? What is their vision of the future? This online roundtable will be a gathering place for future leaders to discuss ideas, perceptions, and anticipations of the next generation libraries.

Learning Outcomes:

  • Learn where the future of libraries is heading by those who will shape it.
  • Establish a network of young professionals interested in leading the next generation libraries.
  • Learn how we can obtain the necessary skills to transform libraries in the future.

Presenter(s): Bonnie Tijerina, Georgia Institute of Technology; Brian Mathews, Georgia Institute of Technology
