The development of the World Wide Web, rapidly emerging new electronic media, and shifting trends in scholarly communication are challenging 21^stcentury science and technology librarians to be very creative, proactive, and dynamic. They must take on new roles, not only in the ways they provide services to their clientele, but also, establishing partnerships, coalitions, and connections at the personal and organizational levels. The pace of change in the provision of information is escalating with federated searching, development of institutional repositories, and the necessity for sweeping changes in the process of scholarly communication. Science librarians are at a new crossroads - are we ready? Have we developed the right skills and expertise? Will Charles Darwin's theory of "survival of the fittest" work for science librarians? If so, what does the future hold for science and technology librarians?
