LD Survey for Librarians

One of the objectives of the Roads To Learning initiative is to identify public libraries that have collections and/or services for people with learning disabilities or might consider beginning such services. Please help us with this work and with identifying good practices!

The term “learning disability” means a disorder in one or more of the basic processes involved in understanding spoken or written language. Put another way, it impedes the ability to store, process or produce information. It may show up as a problem in a person's ability to listen, think, speak, read, write, spell, or do math, despite at least average intelligence.

The term “learning disabled” does not refer to people who have learning problems which are primarily the result of visual, hearing or physical handicaps, mental retardation, emotional disturbance, or of environmental, cultural, or economic disadvantage.

New Listserv on Learning Disabilities and Public Libraries

Roads To Learning, the Public Libraries' Learning Disabilities Initiative, has announced the launch of its listserv, PLLD-L. The listserv is intended to be a forum for people who want to learn more about learning disabilities and their implication for public library collections and services, and those who are currently providing such services. Though it is designed primarily for library staff, members of the learning disability community are also invited to participate.

To subscribe to PLLD-L, send an e-mail message to listproc@ala.org. Leave the subject line blank; if your system requires a subject line, type in "subscribe" but without the quotation marks. As the first and only line of text in the message, type in:

subscribe PLLD-L<yourFirstName> <yourLastName>

Send the message. You will get an acknowledgment of your subscription.

The goal of Roads To Learning is to bring information about learning disabilities to the public through libraries while increasing public libraries' capacity to serve people with learning disabilities and their families. The project is funded by a grant from the Emily Hall Tremaine Foundation and administered by the Association of Specialized and Cooperative Library Agencies (ASCLA), a division of the American Library Association.
