About the Committee
Background: The Task Force on Rural School, Tribal and Public Libraries engaged in research on various issues involving the needs of rural libraries. It concluded that a standing committee of ALA should be created in order to address the needs of rural libraries of all kinds. At the 2004 Annual Conference, Council approved the establishment of a standing committee for this purpose
Charge: To review issues and challenges facing rural, native and tribal libraries of all kinds; to collaborate with other ALA units addressing the needs of rural communities; and to serve as an advocate for and partner with libraries serving rural, tribal and native populations. The Committee shall consist of eleven (11) members, chair to be appointed annually by the ALA Appointing Officer:
- 1 member from the American Indian Library Association, appointed by the president
- 1 member from PLA, appointed by the PLA presiding officer
- 1 member from AASL, appointed by the AASL presiding officer
- 1 member appointed by the chair of the Legislation Committee, Washington office
- 1 member appointed by the OLOS Advisory Committee Chair
- 6 members at large to be selected by the ALA appointing officer
- Initially, five members shall be appointed for one-year terms from 2005-2006, and six members shall be appointed for two-year terms from 2005-2007.
