Intellectual Freedom Committee (standing, Council)

Charge

The Intellectual Freedom Committee (IFC) recommends such steps as may be necessary to safeguard the rights of library users, libraries, and librarians, in accordance with the First Amendment to the United States Constitution and the Library Bill of Rights as adopted by the ALA Council and works closely with the Office for Intellectual Freedom and with other units and officers of the Association in matters touching intellectual freedom and censorship.

Subcommittee

IFC Privacy subcommittee monitors ongoing privacy developments in technology (in cooperation with LITA), politics and legislation (in cooperation with COL), and social trends; to identify needs and resources for librarians and library users; to propose action to IFC on resolutions, policies, and guidelines as well as on educational, informational, promotional and other projects; and to collaborate with other organizations (e.g., LITA and COL).

Upcoming meetings

The Intellectual Freedom Committee conducts four meetings during the ALA Midwinter Meetings and three during ALA Annual Conference.  Midwinter schedule: Saturday, 8:00 to 10:00 AM; Sunday, 1:30 to 6:00 PM; Monday, 1:30 to 6:00 PM; Tuesday, 1:30 to 4:00 PM.  Annual Conference schedule: Friday, 8:00 to 12:30 PM; Saturday, 8:00 to 12:30 PM; Tuesday, 1:30 to 4:30 PM.  We also have a Spring Meeting, which is typically held in either March or April. 

The IFC Privacy subcommittee typically meets on Saturday from 4:00 to 6:00 PM during  Midwinter and Annual Conference.

All IFC meetings are open to all members of ALA.
