
The ALA Office for Diversity Honors Ethelene Whitmire for Achievement in Library Diversity Research at New Orleans Annual Conference.
As part of its ongoing support of the propagation of library-based diversity research, the ALA Office for Diversity was pleased to announce the 3rd annual recipient of the "Achievement in Library Diversity Research", Ethelene Whitmire. The Office for Diversity began designating this honor in 2004.
Ethelene Whitmire, an Assistant Professor at the University of Wisconsin - Madison’s School of Library & Information Studies, received her PhD from the University of Michigan’s Center for the Study of Higher & Postsecondary Education and her MLS from Rutgers University. A former Librarian-in-Residence at Yale University, her research on diversity and undergraduates has been published in numerous journals including College & Research Libraries, Journal of Academic Librarianship, and Library & Information Science Research. She teaches courses on information seeking and reference services. Her current research focuses on a biography of African American librarian, Regina Andrews (1901 - 1993).
Recipients of the Achievement in Library Diversity Research Honor receive complimentary Annual Conference registration. Whitmire will receive the honor and make opening remarks during the “Charting Courses: Excellence in Diversity Research” panel program, Saturday, 4:00 - 5:30 pm
Convention Center, Room 242, during the New Orleans Annual Conference. She will be joined by recipients of the 2005 Diversity Research Grant Recipients: Isabel Espinal presents the results of her study "Collaborating with Reforma Librarians to Study Emerging Latin@ Readership"; Dr. Wooseob Jeong looks at expanding access to the blind and visually impaired through the use of an online Braille generator; and Karen J. Underhill discusses her project "Native American Protocols for American Libraries, Archives, and Information Services".
