ALAHead to 2010

Strategic Plan

At the 2005 Annual Conference, ALA Council approved the adoption of a new strategic plan, referred to as “ALA Ahead to 2010.”  This Strategic Plan is the result of a two-year long association-wide planning process that included:

  • Focus groups at division and association-wide conferences
  • Open ALA Forum discussions at Chapter conferences
  • An email questionnaire to all ALA members
  • Opportunities for leadership input at ALA Council Information Sessions, ALA Membership Meeting, and the Planning and Budget Assembly during the 2004 ALA Annual Conference
  • Telephone interviews with non-members
  • Review of planning documents from ALA divisions and other groups
  • External environmental scanning

A subcommittee of the ALA Executive Board was appointed to work with senior staff on the final drafting of the strategic plan.  An initial draft of the plan was forwarded to ALA member bodies at the 2005 ALA Midwinter Meeting.  The draft plan was also posted to the ALA 2010 website and a questionnaire was sent to ALA members soliciting comments on the draft plan.  The final plan is firmly based on substantial member input, and reflects the collective efforts of many member leaders and staff.
