AASL 2004 Member Survey Data

Gap

So where are the gaps? In what areas do we need to consider focusing more attention to meet members' perception of importance? If we look at a comparison chart ranked by importance but also including performance, we see the following value propositions as where our members indicate there is the largest gap. Note that listed next to each item is the number gap based on a 5-point scale. (See chart: AASL Activities Comparison of Importance & Performance.)

  • Advocacy - 1.10
  • Professional Development - 0.84
  • Continuing Issues - 0.77
  • Community - 0.69
  • National Standards - 0.64
  • Position Statements - 0.58

These gaps are significant but not enormous for this type of survey. (See sidebar: What Do the Gaps Mean?) Clearly our members who responded to the survey want us to do more in the area of advocacy, professional development and continuing issues. However, other areas that also had high importance, such as Knowledge Quest, SLMR and the National Conference, had very low gaps. Also, our members indicated that the following areas had a statistically insignificant gap in importance and performance.

  • Awards
  • Web site
  • Volunteer Opportunities
  • E-mail Communication
  • National Conference
  • AASL Hotlinks

Study the data and see what AASL members have to say about the organization. This data will be one item used to drive decision-making in our strategic planning, which will be initiated this fall by the AASL Board under the leadership of Dawn Vaughan, AASL 2004-2005 President.

If you have any questions about the data please contact Steven Hofmann at AASL shofmann@ala.org, or if you have questions about the interpretation of the data contact me at froscell@mail.nysed.gov.
