maintain at Palm Beach Gardens High School: http://web.mac.com/debsvec.
Accomplishments: I work with our Intensive
Reading students and have implemented two initiatives on my campus to
compliment the reading curriculum and enhance reading test scores. Both
efforts are directed at Level 1 & 2 students. The first is the iRead
Project. The program provides an iPod Nano with an audio title and text
version of the same. This effort models fluency, increases vocabulary
& allows the struggling reader to enjoy titles they might not
otherwise attempt to read. I also introduced the Superior Thinker
Attained by Reading (S.T.A.R.) Methodology to our reading
teachers/students. I read aloud and then play a thoroughly engaging TV
style game show based on Higher Order Thinking (HOT) skill questions.
The method is discussion based with defense of the answers based on
contextual proof. I am a trainer for the school districts Educational
Technology Dept. and am the lead trainer for Team TLC (Technology,
Leadership, Collaboration) an initiative to train/mentor other district
media specialists to embed technology into their teaching practices.
STATEMENT: Media Specialists are at a pivotal
point as we transform our libraries into digital literacy hubs. We are
an instrumental component in educating 21st Century students that are
information literate and independent learners. It is imperative for us
as professionals to be an active part of the reading initiatives on our
campus. As librarians we continue to define the crucial role of our
profession, not only as educators but also as leaders in the area of
Information Literacy. I welcome the opportunity to serve AASL.
