No Flying, No Tights: Superheroes (and Comics) Aren't What they Used to Be
Beginning a graphic novel (GN) collection for a school library can be scary. It's an unfamiliar medium for some librarians, and many comics are inappropriate for younger students - maybe even inappropriate for a school library - and reviews in professional journals are a relatively new trend.
So what's a school librarian to do?

Robin Brenner's site, No Flying No Tights, has come to the rescue with reviews of comics for kids, for teens, and for adults, all categorized by age & genre. When choosing the name for the site, Brenner tells us in an e-mail that she was inspired by a medium other than comics:
"Actually, the name is "stolen." When I was creating the website, I was trying to find a fun name. I'd become a fan of the show Smallville, and the creators kept insisting they would never show any flying or tights on the show. I kind of took that phrase and ran with it, and in my head it's come to represent that fact that graphic novels are a lot more than superheroes. It does have the unfortunate problem of having some folks think I don't like superheroes, which is far from the truth, but now I can't change it."
