Managing Copyright in Schools

Carol Simpson

Copyright compliance is difficult for those who seek to follow the law. For those who are unaware of the requirements of copyright, the smallest act of compliance is a tremendous shock to long-standing habits and seemingly reasonable excuses. Compliance can be divided into two phases: things and people. People are easier to manage if things are tracked and clearly identified so the people are constantly reminded. Several suggestions for tracking and marking copyright-protected materials are included. People require education, commitment, and administrative support to follow through on compliance issues. Specific guidelines for bringing staff and administrators into compliance are included. (p. 18)

Carol Simpson is an assistant professor for the School of Library and Information Sciences at the University of North Texas, Denton.
