Xerox Global Services is proud of their services and offerings that assist libraries to better serve their patrons and local communities. For decades, Xerox Corporation has provided services to libraries, primarily in the form of copy and/or print requirements. With the formation of Xerox Global Services in 2001, new opportunities to investigate and solve library business challenges have driven creative, new modular offerings that focus on patron needs.
With their patron access offerings, the library card can now bring fair and equitable access to library services. Patrons can reserve PC time, add cash to library accounts for printing and copying, create and promote "child safe" internet environments, and much more... giving time back to staff members.
We are committed to partner with libraries to help patrons with their information needs. Our technical and client partnerships are key ingredients to our success, and we will continue to monitor the pulse of the industry to drive and expand the vision of this offering.

PLA to launch "Smartest Card" Campaign
Everyone wants to be in our wallet these days, right? The Public Library Association, a division of ALA, is preparing to launch a new initiative to encourage everyone to get and use "the smartest card" of all-a library card. "This campaign is all about the tremendous value our libraries offer," says PLA President Luis Herrera, director of the Pasadena Public Library. "We want to engage library staff at all levels in getting the message out."
A state network of campaign coordinators will meet for the first time at the ALA Annual Conference. Their charge is to help get the word about the campaign and to provide feedback to PLA to use in developing the campaign.
PLA has made a multi-year commitment to the campaign and will focus on one or two key external audiences each year. For the initial year, the audiences are families and "influentials"-funders and policymakers, community and business leaders. A poster, bookmark and other promotional materials aimed at families will be available in the ALA Graphics Catalog in August.
Another key audience is library staff. One of the campaign goals is to help libraries-especially small and medium-sized libraries-position themselves as partners for vibrant, educated communities, as places of opportunity-and a bargain for taxpayers. "Libraries may not have millions of dollars to spend on advertising campaigns, but we do have millions of people walking in our doors," Herrera explained. "We need to get smart about how we use this opportunity."
The PLA 2005 Spring Symposium, to be held in Chicago March 7-9, will feature two half-day workshops on how to building a marketing communication plan and how to develop and deliver a powerful message.
Advocacy is a fundamental goal of the PLA Strategic Plan. The campaign theme "The Smartest Card. Get it. Use it. @ your library(r) builds on ALA's Campaign for America's Libraries. It was selected based on the work of the PLA @ your library Task Force, the PLA Strategic Plan and on focus groups with public librarians and the members of the public.
3 M Library Systems is a sponsor of the PLA initiative and a founding Partner in ALA's @ your library (r) Campaign for America's Libraries. For more campaign information, see www.pla.org/smartestcard.htm.
