Every Child Ready to Read @ Your Library -Training Kits Available for Purchase

Current research on early literacy and brain development indicates that it is never too early to prepare children for success as readers. Parents of newborns, toddlers and preschoolers must be informed of their critical role as their children's first teacher.  PLA and ALSC have incorporated the latest research into a series of parent and caregiver workshops to provide public libraries with vital tools to help prepare parents for this critical role.  These tools were developed by Dr. Grover C. Whitehurst and Dr. Christopher Lonigan, well-known researchers in emergent literacy, and have been tested and refined by library demonstrations sites around the country.

Learn more about the project and order the training resources you will need to conduct this training at your library.  Visit www.pla.org today.

PLA Regional Workshops Coming Soon!

PLA is sponsoring two regional workshops in the next few months:

Staffing for Results - Who is doing the work at your library?  How long does it take?  Is this the best use of people available? Do you need more staff?  PLA's "Staffing for Results: A Guide to Working Smarter" (ALA Editions, 2003) can help you answer these key questions and others related to the output and performance of your staff.  PLA is sponsoring a one-day workshop taught by the authors of the book in Chicago on July 27, 2004.In this one-day workshop, the coauthors of the book, Diane Mayo and Jeanne Goodrich, will provide library managers and human resources managers information on how best to use the book's figures and work forms in your library to ensure that your library is optimizing its resources. Participants will leave this workshop ready to use the forms and activities included in Staffing for Results to conduct a staff analysis and with the tools required to help your library to optimize its personnel resources.  Registration form is available now on the PLA web site, www.pla.org.
NEW Planning for Results - On October 19, 2004, PLA is hosting a one-day workshop on the NEW Planning for Results: A Streamlined Approach (ALA Editions, 2001). This hands-on workshop will introduce public library staff members to the streamlined planning process.  If you thought that planning was too hard or too time-consuming to be practical for your library, this workshop is for you.  Participants will leave this workshop with the skills needed to use the books forms in creating a plan for their library!  Led by Sandra Nelson, author of the book, the workshop will be held in New Orleans, Louisiana (specific location to be determined). More information will be provided shortly - visit PLA's website, www.pla.org for more information, or call 800-545-2433, ext. 5752, email: pla@ala.org .

Daniel L. Walters Elected PLA Vice-President

Daniel L. Walters, executive director of the Las Vegas-Clark County Library District, has been elected vice-president/president-elect of the Public Library Association (PLA). Walters hopes to focus his presidency on a number of library issues, stating: "In many communities, economic conditions have led to reductions or elimination of core library services, layoffs, fewer open hours, and even closure of libraries. As these fiscal challenges erode local services, public librarians struggle to provide the best solution for our communities. In addition, passage of the Patriot Act, and the Supreme Court CIPA ruling have led to intense and sometimes volatile debates within our profession, libraries, and communities regarding long standing approaches to privacy, the parent's right to choose service options for their children, and other library policy issues. As public librarians face these challenges, it is more crucial than ever for PLA leadership to remain responsive to its members and to ensure vital forums for member enrichment and professional development. I hope to continue that strong tradition."

An active member of ALA for nearly twenty years, Walters has chaired committees in both PLA and the Library Administration and Management Association (LAMA). In addition to his ALA activities, he is or has been an active member in several other professional groups including OCLC, the Nevada Library Association, the Washington Library Association, the Las Vegas Executives Association, and the New York Library Association. He also has served as a member of various civic organizations including as a member of the Executive Committee of the American Red Cross (Inland Northwest Chapter), and on the Board of Directors of the Spokane, Washington, YMCA.
Under his stewardship, the Las Vegas-Clark County Library District has won several local and national awards including "Best Public Sector Employer" and "the 2003 Gale/Library Journal Library of the Year." Walters also is a contributor to professional journals and recently was named the Community Person of the Year, by the Las Vegas (Nevada) Asian Chamber of Commerce.

He earned his master's degree in librarianship from the University of Washington School of Librarianship and also earned his bachelor's degree at the University of Washington. For more information contact PLA at 312-280-5752. PLA is a division of the American Library Association.
