Policies for Results Workshop Offered via PLA e-Learning

The first course of study offered in PLA's e-Learning series is "Creating Policies for Results." In this course, which is based on the popular American Library Association (ALA) publication, "Creating

Policies For Results-From Chaos to Clarity," participants will work with the publication's authors Sandra Nelson and June Garcia, as they encounter real library policy problems. Participants will gain useful knowledge, skills, and judgment that will enable them to produce useable policies tailored to their individual libraries. The curriculum features interactive exercises, collaborative work, and online chats with instructors and colleagues. Each participant will have approximately six-months to finish the course, and then another six-months access to the e-learning@PLA system.

Interested parties are encouraged to enroll in one of following sessions:

  • April 26, 2004
  • May 24, 2004
  • June 28, 2004
  • July 26, 2004

(Registration closes one week before the start date of the session.) Please note that course curriculum will supplement information provided in "Creating Policies for Results-From Chaos to Clarity," and participants will be expected to have access to a copy of the publication before they begin the course. The book is available via the ALA Online Store at www.ala.org, or by calling the ALA Order department at 1-866-746-7252.

For more information regarding "e-learning @ PLA" please contact the PLA office at 1-800-545-2433, ext. 5752, or www.pla.org

PLA Public Library Advocacy Campaign

An exciting new campaign to help promote the value of your library and public libraries nationwide was unveiled to public librarians at the PLA National Conference in Seattle. The campaign will reach out to national media and decision-makers to deliver our advocacy message. The campaign will provide sample press materials, posters, downloadable art, and other promotional materials to help get public attention and reach out to key groups in your community. The official campaign launch will be September, 2004 - National Library Card Sign-Up Month. In the meantime, we want to hear from public librarians about the campaign and what will help them most. This campaign is designed especially for you. The campaign must complement and enhance local marketing efforts. Please complete the online survey (see www.pla.org ) and tell us what you think about this new initiative.

Swap & Shop Seeks Your Library's Sizzling PR Pieces

For ALA 2004

Don't toss out last year's great publicity pieces - share them with your colleagues! The LAMA/PRMS Swap & Shop committee invites you to gather your library's best publicity materials from 2003 to send to this summer's Swap and Shop event in sunny Orlando. Swap and Shop, an invaluable annual conference tradition, is an explosion of ideas, the perfect place for library professionals to find inspiration for future projects.

Swap and Shop is scheduled for Sunday, June 27, from 11 a.m. until 1 p.m. at the Orange County Convention Center. (Check your program for the final location information.) In addition to hundreds of free publicity samples, this PR extravaganza will include many other features, including the following:

Display of Swap and Shop's Best of Show contest winners

One-on-one consultations with "PR Docs" Linda Wallace and Peggy Barber

  • @ your library campaign information
  • Vendor displays
  • John Cotton Dana Library Public Relations Awards winners showcase
  • Library Public Relations Council's "L. PeRCy" awards display

All types and sizes of libraries are encouraged to send PR items created in 2003 for the swap. Showcase your own hard work, and plan to see what others have to offer by attending the event. You'll enjoy freebies galore - inspiring samples to take home - plus door prizes and lots of public relations professionals on hand to help, as well.

To have your materials included in the Swap & Shop, you must send them to Orlando ahead of time. You can start shipping in May, and your box must arrive by Wednesday, June 16. Address your package with a red marker (so that it's properly sorted at the warehouse), pack up 250 to 350 copies of your samples from 2003, and ship them to this exact address:

LAMA/PRMS SWAP & SHOP
c/o GES Exposition Services
Yellow Freight System, Inc
1265 LaQuinta Drive
Orlando, FL 32809

If you think your publicity really "pops," share your public relations materials so that other professionals' pieces can sizzle, too! If you need more details, contact the committee chair, Ashley Fowlkes, at the Bowling Green (KY) Public Library, 270.781.4882, extension 222; email: ashleyf@bgpl.org.

The Swap & Shop Committee is part of the Public Relations and Marketing section of the Library Administration & Management Association (LAMA) division of ALA.

Library Workers Day

The first annual National Library Workers Day will be celebrated on Tuesday, April 20th. The theme for 2004 is: LIBRARIES WORK BECAUSE WE DO!

Library systems, managers, staff, patrons, and friends groups are encouraged by ALA-Allied Professional Association to make a special effort on this day of National Library Week to show their appreciation for the hard work and dedication of all library workers. For ideas, see the National Library Workers Day Web Site at http://www.ala-apa.org/nlwd/index.htm and http://www.ala-apa.org/nlwd/NLWDideas.html . Many of the ideas are submissions from workers across the country who celebrate one another's contributions to library service and operations on a regular basis.

This day coincides with National Pay Equity Day (National Committee on Pay Equity - http://www.pay-equity.org) and it is during National Volunteer Recognition Week (Points of Light - http://www.pointsoflight.org).

Have fun! Send me your stories about that day and photos!
