PROGRAM PROPOSAL SITE FOR PLA 2006 NATIONAL CONFERENCE NOW AVAILABLE

The Public Library Association (PLA) is now planning the 2006 PLA National Conference, which will be held in Boston, March 21-25, 2006. The most important part of that planning is assembling the slate of preconferences and the 100+ concurrent program sessions that will be presented during the conference. Visit www.pla.org to submit a proposal.

The proposal process is completely electronic: only proposals submitted through this online process (www.pla.org) will be considered. Proposals will be reviewd by the members of the 2006 National Conference Program Subcommittee and will be rated according to Content (Is it creative/interesting? Is it timely? How practical is it?); Speakers (Are they experienced presenters? What are their qualifications?); and Format (Is it appropriate to the content being presented? Is it creative?).

The deadline for submitting all proposals is November 30, 2004.  For questions about the proposal process, contact Linda Bostrom at the PLA office, lbostrom@ala.org or 800-545-2433, ext. 5027.

ALA AND PLA LAUNCH "SMARTEST CARD" CAMPAIGN DURING LIBRARY CARD SIGN-UP MONTH - "SMARTEST CARD" TOOLKIT AVAILABLE ONLINE

Observed since 1987, Library Card Sign Up Month is a time when the American Library Association (ALA) and libraries across the country remind parents that a library card is the most important school supply of all. The message this year is that the library card is also the smartest card a child can own. PLA's new campaign officially kicks off this month, in conjunction with Library Card Sign-Up Month. This month, libraries across the country will use the campaign to promote library card use and enrollment, including teaming with local elected officials in media events and other activities. See http://www.ala.org/, click "Issues and Advocacy" and scroll to National Library Card Sign Up Month for more information.

And, to help libraries make the most of Library Card Sign-Up month and the campaign, "The Smartest Card. The Smartest Campaign," a new toolkit with graphics and sample publicity materials is online at www.pla.org/smartestcard.htm. The message: "The Smartest Card. Get it. Use it. @ your library(r).

Advocacy is a fundamental goal of the PLA Strategic Plan. The "Smartest Card" campaign focuses on how public libraries save you money, help make you smart and are a bargain for taxpayers. It was selected based on the work of the PLA @ your library(r) Task Force, the PLA Strategic Plan and on focus groups with members of the public and public librarians. PLA has made a multi-year commitment and will focus on one or two key external audiences each year. For the initial year, the audiences are families and "influentials"-funders and policymakers, community and business leaders.

Another primary audience is library staff, trustees, Friends, and other members of the library "family." One of the campaign goals is to help libraries-especially small and medium-sized libraries-position themselves as partners for vibrant, educated communities, as places of opportunity-and a bargain for taxpayers.

A "Smartest Card" poster, bookmark, and other promotional materials directed at families is available in the Fall 2004 ALA Graphics Catalog and from the ALA online store at www.alastore.ala.org. 3M Library Systems is a sponsor of the PLA initiative and a founding Partner in ALA's @ your library (r) Campaign for America's Libraries.

Stay tuned to the PLA web site for more campaign news during the launch month at www.pla.org/smartestcard.htm

NEW PLANNING FOR RESULTS ONE DAY WORKSHOP - October 19

Does your library need to develop a new operational plan? If you thought that planning was too hard or too time-consuming to be practical for your library, this workshop is for you! The Public Library Association's The NEW Planning for Results: A Streamlined Approach (ALA Editions, 2001) incorporates the experiences and recommendations of many of the librarians who used the 1997 version of Planning for Results to make this a uniquely informative planning tool. The NEW Planning for Results presents a simplified process that most library managers can complete in a few short months.

PLA is sponsoring a one-day workshop taught by the author of the book, Sandra Nelson, in New Orleans, Louisiana on October 19, 2004. This hands-on workshop will introduce public library staff members to this streamlined planning process. Participants will leave this workshop with the skills needed to begin to plan for results!

This program is appropriate for library managers and trustees. The cost for PLA members is $175 and the deadline for registering is September 24, 2004. You can find complete information and the registration form at www.pla.org. Space is limited so sign up today!

UNIVERSITY PRESS BOOKS BIBLIOGRAPHY ONLINE

Each year, librarians who work with middle high school students and the general public, select, review, and rate hundreds of books from scholarly presses. The results are published by the Association of American University Presses (AAUP) in an annual volume, "University Press Books Selected for Public and Secondary School Libraries," that is distributed free of charge to more than 13,000 U.S. librarians. For the first time this valuable collection development tool is also being made available online at www.aaupnet.org/librarybooks.

The almost 500 books listed in the 2004 edition include works on a wide variety of subjects - Eskimo architecture, zinfandel, camembert, Spanish-language science fiction, "The Simpsons," dragons, mummies, and the American presidency, to name a few. A joint project of AAUP, the American Association of School Librarians (AASL), and the Public Library Association (PLA), this bibliography is a popular and trusted acquisitions resource.
