PLA Announces Keynote Speakers for National Conference

Several prominent authors will provide keynote addresses during the upcoming Public Library Association (PLA) National Conference, "PLA 2004." The conference will be held February 24-28, 2004, in Seattle, Washington. Scheduled events include:

Preconference Luncheon - Tuesday, February 24, 2004

The preconference author luncheon will feature E. Ethelbert Miller. An award-winning poet, commentator, and educator, Miller also is the author of several books including "Beyond the Frontier," "Fathering Words: The Making of an African-American Writer," "Buddha Weeping in Winter," and many others. Tickets are $35 for this event.

Opening General Session - Wednesday, February 25, 2004

Novelist and Pulitzer-prize winning journalist Anna Quindlen will keynote the PLA 2004 Opening General Session. Quindlen's novels include the critically acclaimed "Blessings," "Object Lessons," and "One True Thing," as well as "Black and Blue," which was an Oprah Winfrey Book Club selection. Both "Living Out Loud" and "Thinking Out Loud," collections of Quindlen's Op-Ed columns for the ' New York Times,' were instant bestsellers, as was her popular "A Short Guide to a Happy Life." Quindlen's current column, "The Last Word," appears biweekly in ' Newsweek.'

Closing Session - Saturday, February 28, 2004

Poet, writer, and film producer Sherman Alexie will keynote the PLA 2004 Closing Session. Alexie published his first book, "The Business of Fancydancing," in 1992. His collection of short stories, "The Lone Ranger and Tonto Fistfight in Heaven," was a citation winner for the PEN/Hemmingway Award for Best First Fiction and his novels, "Reservation Blues" (1995)," and "Indian Killer"(1998), also received critical acclaim. His most recent book, "The Toughest Indian in the World," was published in 2001. He is currently working on a screenplay for his novel, "Reservation Blues," which he will also direct and co-produce.

Author Luncheons - Thursday, February 26, and Friday, February 27

On Thursday Linda K. Rath, curriculum director for "Between the Lions," and Christopher Cerf, author, television producer, and cofounder of the educational television production company, Sirius Thinking, Ltd. will keynote the children's author luncheon. Thursday's adult author luncheon speaker is unconfirmed at this time. Friday's Luncheon speakers include Harlan Coben, author of the best-sellers "Tell No One" and "Gone For Good," and Young Adult novelist, Nancy Farmer, whose books "The Ear, The Eye, and The Arm" and "A Girl Named Disaster" were named Newbery Award Honor Books. Tickets are $35.

Seattle Supper

This year PLA will host a "Seattle Supper" on Thursday evening, February 26, at 6:00 p.m. The speakers for this informal dinner will be novelists Jayne Ann Krentz, J.A. Jance, and narrator Dick Hill. Preregistration is required for the Seattle Supper; tickets are $45.

Interested in Writing for the "Results" Series?

There are many librarians with subject knowledge and writing skills, and the Public Library Association intends to actively recruit such people to write for PLA's "Results" series over the next several years. Current plans provide resources to publish two new books in the series each year for the foreseeable future. The deadline for submitting qualifications is 12/5/03 - visit www.pla.org for the RFQ (Request for Qualifications) and for more information.

PLA Award Applications Now Available

Applications for the Public Library Association's (PLA) awards and honors are now being sought. Interested individuals are encouraged to submit applications and supporting materials prior to December 1, 2003.

This year's PLA awards/honors are as follows:

  • The Advancement of Literacy Award is sponsored by the Library Journal. This award honors a publisher, bookseller, hardware and/or software dealer, foundation or other similar group, that has made a significant contribution to the advancement of adult literacy.
  • The Allie Beth Martin Award honors a public librarian who demonstrates an extraordinary range and depth of knowledge of books and other library materials, and the ability to share that knowledge. The award includes a $3,000 honorarium from Baker & Taylor.
  • The Baker & Taylor Entertainment Audio Music/Video Product Award promotes the development of a circulating Audio Music/Video Collection in public libraries and increases the exposure of this format within the community. The grant will consist of a $2,500 collection of Audio Music/Videos (ordered through Baker & Taylor). Applicants must submit a proposal that outlines the purpose, benefits, and plan for initiating a circulating Audio Music/Video collection.
  • The Charlie Robinson Award honors a public library director who, over a period of seven years, has been a risk taker, an innovator and/or a change agent in a public library. The award consists of $1,000 and a gift to the librarian. Sponsored by Baker & Taylor.
  • The Demco Creative Merchandising Grant provides cash and supplies to a public library proposing a project for the creative display and merchandising of materials either in the library or in the community. The grant consists of $1,000 cash and $2,000 worth of display furniture or supplies ordered through Demco, Inc. in conjunction with the grant project.
  • The Excellence in Small and/or Rural Public Library Service Award recognizes a public library, serving a population of 10,000 or less that demonstrates excellence of service to its community as exemplified by an overall service program, or a special program of significant accomplishment. The award includes a $1,000 honorarium contributed by EBSCO Subscription Services.
  • The Highsmith Library Innovation Award is a $2,000 award that recognizes a public library's innovative and creative service program to the community. Any innovative or creative program, activity or service that is a benefit to the community will be considered. The program or service must have had measurable impact on the library's clientele. Proposals will be judged on the collaborative efforts of staff and community in the planning and implementation process, and the measurements of success in the community based on usage, program attendances, or greater community awareness.
  • The New Leaders Travel Grant is designed to enhance the professional development and improve the expertise of public librarians who are new to the field by making possible their attendance at major professional development activities. This grant offers financial assistance of up to $1,500 per applicant (for a total not to exceed $5,000 per year) for applicants wanting to attend a major PLA continuing education event.

Staff Changes at PLA

PLA is happy to welcome Shannon Distel to our staff, where she will serve as Program Coordinator. Shannon previously worked part time at two local Chicago libraries and is a part time student at Dominican University in the Graduate School of Library and Information Science.
