Registration is now open for the PLA 2004 National Conference. The Public Library Association (PLA), a division of the American Library Association (ALA), announces a call for award nominations for the year 2003-2004. Each year PLA and various sponsors support an award program recognizing excellence in a variety of public library services. Following is a brief description of each award. PLA'S ADVANCEMENT OF LITERACY AWARD. Sponsored by "Library Journal," the award is given to a publisher, bookseller, software dealer, foundation or similar group that has made a significant contribution toward the advancement of adult literacy.
ALLIE BETH MARTIN AWARD. This award recognizes a public librarian for demonstrating a range and depth of knowledge about books and other library materials and the distinguished ability to share that knowledge. The award consists of $3,000 donated by sponsor Baker & Taylor.
BAKER & TAYLOR ENTERTAINMENT AUDIO MUSIC/VIDEO PRODUCT AWARD GRANT. This grant offers the selected library $2,500 in audio music and video products for its circulating collections ordered through sponsor Baker & Taylor.
CHARLIE ROBINSON AWARD. This award recognizes a public library director for implementation of innovative change. The award consists of $1,000 and a gift to the librarian from sponsor Baker & Taylor.
DEMCO CREATIVE MERCHANDISING GRANT. This grant, sponsored by Demco, Inc., provides $1,000 cash and $2,000 worth of supplies to a public library proposing a project for the creative display and merchandising of materials either in the library or in the community.
EBSCO EXCELLENCE IN SMALL AND/OR RURAL PUBLIC LIBRARY SERVICE AWARD. EBSCO Subscription Services donates $1,000 to honor a public library serving a population of 10,000 or fewer that demonstrates excellence in service to its community as exemplified by an overall service program or a special program of significant accomplishment.
THE HIGHSMITH LIBRARY INNOVATION AWARD. This award recognizes a public library's innovative achievement in planning and implementing a program or service that is a benefit to the overall community. A plaque and a $2,000 honorarium are provided by Highsmith, Inc., the award's sponsor.
NEW LEADERS TRAVEL GRANT. The travel grant, shared between the recipients, is donated by GEAC Inc. to support the professional development and improve the expertise of public librarians new to the field by making possible their attendance at major professional development activities.

The American Library Association (ALA) Public Programs Office and the National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH) are accepting applications from public and school (K-12) libraries for the We The People Bookshelf grants. Part of NEH's We The People initiative, the Bookshelf project will award the 15 Bookshelf books for young readers to up to 500 libraries across the country. Selected libraries are required to present programs that highlight the theme of "courage" and encourage young readers to explore these works.
Libraries interested in receiving the We The People Bookshelf grant can view the application and guidelines at www.ala.org/wethepeople or www.wethepeople.gov . Applications are being accepted online until October 22, 2003 for Round One and February 15, 2004 for Round Two.

ALA President-elect Carol A. Brey-Casiano is seeking applications and nominations for members to serve on the 2004-2005 ALA and Council committees, with the appointments to be effective at the conclusion of the 2004 Annual Conference.
Brey-Casiano will fill slots on the following committees: ALA: Accreditation; American Libraries Advisory; Awards; Chapter Relations; Conference; Constitution and Bylaws; Election; Human Resource Development and Recruitment Advisory; Information Technology Policy Advisory; Literacy; Literacy and Outreach Services Advisory; Membership; Membership Meetings; Nominating; Orientation, Training, and Leadership Development; Research and Statistics; Web Site Advisory; ALA-Children's Book Council Joint; and ALA-Society of American Archivists-American Association of Museums Joint. Council: Budget Analysis and Review; Diversity; Education; Intellectual Freedom; International Relations; Legislation; Organization; Council Orientation; Pay Equity; Policy Monitoring (current Council members only); Professional Ethics; Public Awareness Advisory; Publishing; Resolutions; and Status of Women in Librarianship.
Letters of application and nomination should include a brief summary of the nominee's qualifications for the committee(s) for which he or she is being nominated. The name of the committee(s) for which the application or nomination is being submitted should be clearly indicated. Self-nominations may also be submitted. Geographical location, type of library, gender, ethnicity, previous committee work (not necessarily with ALA), ALA and related experience, and other factors are considered when the committee slates are compiled in order to ensure broad representation and diversity on all committees.

The Fulbright-Hays Seminars Abroad Program provides short-term study and travel seminars abroad for U.S. educators in the social sciences and humanities, including library science, for the purpose of improving their understanding and knowledge of the peoples and cultures of other countries.
Seminars are four to six weeks in duration and take place from late June to mid-August. There are generally ten seminars each summer with 16 positions per seminar. Round-trip international airfare, room and board, and program-related travel within the host country(ies) are all covered by the Fulbright-Hays Program.
A special bilateral seminar will be hosted in Summer 2004 by Canada and Mexico. The seminar, entitled "Getting to Know America's Neighbors: Nationhood, Culture, and Identity in Mexico and Canada," will explore the construction of national and cultural identity by looking at culture and identity in Mexico and Canada. In Canada, participants will visit several regions, including the Canadian arctic and Quebec City. In Mexico, visits will include Oaxaca, Puebla, and Michoacán.
