PLA Facilitation Skills Workshop, October 13-17, 2003

The Public Library Association (PLA) has presented several weeklong train-the-trainer institutes designed to teach practicing librarians how to introduce librarians and library board members to the New Planning for Results, Managing for Results, and Staffing for Results.

Now, PLA is offering a unique weeklong institute designed to train practicing librarians and consultants how to facilitate the planning process in individual libraries. This event is scheduled to take place October 13-17, 2003, in New Orleans, La., at the Omni Royal Crescent Hotel. Registration fee is $795. PLA provides all training materials, continental breakfasts (Tuesday-Friday) and luncheons (Monday-Thursday).

The focus of this program is quite different than earlier train-the-trainer programs and will emphasize facilitation skills and not information about New Planning for Results. Participants will be expected to be comfortable with the theory and content of the New Planning for Results process.

The program will include the following segments:

  • Introduction to facilitation - roles and activities
  • Planning responsibilities, agreements, and contracts
  • Working with the client library to design the planning process and prepare the staff and board
  • Facilitating the first meeting of the planning committee (facilitation activity)
  • Facilitation skills - managing groups
  • Facilitating the staff and board review of the preliminary service responses selected during the first committee meeting (facilitation activity)
  • Facilitating the second meeting of the planning committee (facilitation activity)
  • Facilitation skills - helping groups reach consensus
  • Helping staff in the client library write goals and objectives
  • Implementation issues and responsibilities
  • Characteristics of a good facilitator and personal assessment tools

Participants will leave the training with the specific skills and information needed to help a client library design and implement a planning process based on the New Planning for Results and with the broader skills needed to facilitate other group activities and projects.

Space is limited and the selection of the participants is a competitive process. The deadline for submitting applications is August 31, 2003. Applications may be mailed, submitted electronically or by fax. The meeting agenda and application are available here

Questions and concerns can be directed to Linda Bostrom, e-mail: lbostrom@ala.org; phone: 800/545-2433, ext. 5027; fax: 312/280-5029.

Liberty Day Kids

Liberty Day Kids is an activity to educate people about our country's founding documents -- the US Constitution and the Declaration of Independence. The organization called Liberty Day (not just about a day) has been putting together activities that help kids to learn about the US Constitution for 7years.

One of the group's most successful activities is called Liberty Day Kids. A ‘team’ of 2 to 4 fifth or sixth grade kids (kids aged 10 to 12 years) are each given 24 questions and answers about the US Constitution to study and learn. Then they go to a public place where adults are waiting in line, and quiz them! [sample questions: What are the 5 rights in the First Amendment to the US Constitution? Or . . . How many years are there in a US Senator’s term of office?] The questions and answers are taken directly from the exact text of the Constitution -- no ‘interpretation’ or ‘concept’ questions. The kids are learning and awareness is raised all around.

Liberty Day been doing this in various states for over a year, but would like to make it a national effort. Liberty Day is attempting to get AT LEAST 20 teams of Liberty Day Kids in each state (kids between the ages of 10 and 12), with 2 to 4 kids per team, to go someplace where people are waiting in line (this is usually US Post Offices, motor vehicle offices, airline ticket counters) for at least one hour, to quiz customers waiting in line about the US Constitution. Be sure to get permission first!! (The national US Post Office knows about this, and wants us to get individual permission from local postmasters).

Liberty Day is planning to do a big national Liberty Day Kids event on December 13th, 2003. Volunteers are usually service club members, but are often employees of corporations that sponsor teams. In several places in this country, County Commissioners have teams, County Sheriffs have teams, or County District Attorneys have teams. Anyone interested in participating in this National Liberty Day Kids educational effort should contact: Andy McKean, National office, w 303-333-3434, h 303-795-0741, e-mail: libertyday@aol.com or snail mail: 2275 E.
