Career and Business Services Meeting Highlights

ALA Annual Conference 2006, New Orleans, LA

CAPS meets primarily via e-mail since the two active members are not able to attend all meetings/conference.  This year we provided 2 programs for PLA and a Talk Table presentation.  We are presenting Karen Schneider at this conference (Monday, 1:30-3:30).  We are proposing a program for the next PLA conference on what it takes to be a library consultant.

  1. Reviewed three program proposals for 2006

  2. Discussed program ideas for New Orleans

    • Beyond the Resume-program about career services, networking, etc.

    • Who Are You and What Do You Need?-how to survey business community
      to determine needs, engage and partner with entities, use PR and marketing and
      services.

  3. Task Force-PLA taskforce to include public research librarian-how can PLA serve them
    and elevate services

  4. Write article for publication on one of program topics.

The committee submitted a program proposal for Chicago Annual 2005, Online for Business.

We are researching program ideas for Boston 2006.

Barbara Spruill is working on an article for Public Libraries on outreach services to the business committee, which we may work into a panel discussion for a program for ALA or PLA.

These two representatives of the committee decided to propose to the other members a program for ALA 05 with a guest speaker from the business or library world. Shelly Bennett will e-mail the committee with the suggestions she and Barbara came up with and get their input. Deadline: January 2004

Barbara Spruill proposed that the committee jointly author an article about outreach to the business community. She will take the lead and e-mail committee members for their input. Deadline: January 2004

Lastly, Shelly Bennett will explore possible contributions for a "Best Practices" section on the CABS section of the PLA website. She will also be contacting PLA about how to post to the site. Deadline: Orlando ALA conference.
