Summary:  We discussed the program to be presented at ALA Annual 2007 in Washington, DC - "Put Your Money Where Your Circulation Is:  The Fine Art of Budgeting for Libraries."  It will be a panel discussion, moderated/coordinated by Jana Prock; she advises that all speakers have been confirmed.  We discussed co-sponsorship of a program proposed by the PLA Readers' Advisory Committee for the 2008 PLA Conference - "Where Readers Go, Books Follow:  The Future of Audiobooks in Public Libraries."  Possible subjects for a committee program to be put forward for ALA Annual 2008 included the provision of downloadable video in public libraries and the proliferation of games and gaming, perhaps reaching out to YALSA for co-sponsorship; as the proposals would be due by May 1, 2007, further electronic contact will be necessary.

Midwinter Conference 2003

Sunday, January 26, 2003, Philadelphia, PA

We discussed our program for Annual 2003, “AV 101: Basics of Audiovisual Services,” which addresses fundamentals of audiovisual services in relation to areas such as collection development, cataloging, security, and marketing. It will be organized by type of collection – i.e. Video/DVD, Music, and Audiobooks. The 2-hour program will consist of a 10 minute intro, two 40-minute breakaway sessions, and a 20-minute Q&A period.

We also discussed our program at the PLA Conference in Seattle in 2004, “Hear Any Good Books Lately?” which will address audiobooks in public libraries. Four speakers from the audiobook industry and libraries will present.

For ALA Annual 2004 in Orlando, we proposed a program tentatively called “Raising the AV profile @ Your Library,” which would discuss how audiovisual services, though often accounting for half of library circulation, tend to receive short shrift in terms of budget and attention. The program might be divided into three sections, “Selection Philosophy,” “Marketing and Promotion,” and “Community Partnerships.”

We discussed other business, including ways to increase visibility of the PLA-AV Committee, which is the only audiovisual group aimed specifically at public librarians (Video Round Table, in contrast, includes members from all types of libraries).

Members Present: Betty Acerra, Travis Bautz, Adele Bellinger, Elizabeth Blatz, Mike Boedicker, Mary Sue Brown, Constance Hsiu, Sue Kamm,
Judy Napier, Greg Pringle, Marc Sober.

Annual Conference 2002

Chair or Representative: Judy Napier
Date(s) of Meeting(s): Sunday, June 16, 2002

We discussed the program "Let There Be Music" which we had sponsored the previous day. We went over the evaluations and discussed topics for future presentations. We also discussed the program we had submitted for ALA in Toronto in 2003, "AV 101," and talked about how we would organize this program and who could assist with it. We also passed around a roster to see who would be seeking reappointment and who would be finishing their term. I also asked for recommendations for new members in different parts of the country.
